クリスマスと聞いて思い浮かぶのは、サンタクロース、トナカイ、プレゼント。
でも実は、サンタさんのそばには**エルフ（Elf）**という小さな仲間たちがいることを、日本ではほとんど知られていません。
エルフは、サンタクロースのお手伝いをする存在です。
北極にあるサンタの工房で、１年中おもちゃを作ったり、世界中の子どもたちの「いい子リスト」を管理したりしています。
映画や海外の絵本では、カラフルな服を着て、いたずら好きでありながら、とても働き者として描かれています。
実はエルフには、子どもたちを見守る役目もあると言われています。
アメリカなどでは「Elf on the Shelf（棚の上のエルフ）」という文化があり、
１２月になるとエルフが家にやってきて、子どもたちの様子をサンタに報告する、という設定で楽しまれています。
朝起きるとエルフの場所が変わっていて、子どもたちは大喜び。
「ちゃんと見てくれている存在」がいることで、思いやりやルールを学ぶきっかけにもなっています。
日本ではあまり知られていないエルフですが、
実は「誰かを支える」「縁の下で頑張る」という、とても日本的な価値観を持った存在でもあります。
来年のクリスマスは、サンタさんだけでなく、
その裏でこっそり頑張っているエルフたちにも、少しだけ想像をふくらませてみてください。
きっとクリスマスが、今よりもあたたかく、楽しいものになるはずです。

How did you spend Christmas this year?
When we think of Christmas, we usually imagine Santa Claus, reindeer, and presents.
However, many people in Japan don’t know that Santa has small helpers called elves by his side.
Elves help Santa Claus with his work.
At Santa’s workshop in the North Pole, they make toys all year round and manage the “naughty or nice” list of children from all over the world.
In movies and picture books overseas, elves are often shown wearing colorful clothes. They are playful, a little mischievous, and very hard-working.
In fact, elves are also said to watch over children.
In countries like the United States, there is a tradition called “Elf on the Shelf.”
In December, an elf comes to a family’s home and, according to the story, reports children’s behavior to Santa Claus.
Every morning, children wake up to find the elf in a different place, which fills them with excitement.
Having “someone who is watching over them” helps children naturally learn kindness and rules.
Although elves are not well known in Japan, they represent very Japanese values:
supporting others quietly and working hard behind the scenes.
Next Christmas, instead of thinking only about Santa Claus,
try imagining the elves who work secretly in the background.
It may make Christmas feel even warmer and more joyful than before.
